When addressing mail or packages in Japan, keep in mind that the format is different from that used in many other western countries. The order is reversed from what you might be used to. Start with the state name, followed by the city name and then the town name. The street address should come last. If you have a building name, room number, or number, you can include it at the end.

For the state name, you can add 'Ken' (for 90% of the states), 'To' (only for Tokyo, the capital), 'Fu' (for Osaka and Kyoto, the old capital), or 'Do' (only for Hokkaido) at the end of the name, but this is optional. You can also add a dash symbol before the suffix, such as Akita-Ken.

The city name should be follolwed by 'Shi', 'Ku', 'Gun', or 'Mura', with a dash symbol being optional before it. For example, you could write Kita-Ku for the Kita ward in Tokyo.

The town name usually comes with 'Cho' or 'Machi', and you can include a dash symbol before them if you like.
